Darnell Hunt Will Be the Next Provost at the University of Calfornia, Los Angeles

Darnell M. Hunt was appointed executive vice chancellor and provost at the University of Calfornia, Los Angeles. He will begin this new role on September 1, 2022.

“Inclusive excellence and engaged scholarship are more than mere buzzwords,” Dr. Hunt said. “I look forward to working with campus leadership and our broader intellectual community to elevate these longstanding ideals at UCLA in concrete ways. By doing so, I know we can build on UCLA’s extraordinary contributions as one of the world’s great public research universities.”

Dr. Hunt has been serving dean of the Division of Social Sciences and professor of sociology and African American studies at UCLA. After beginning his academic career on the sociology faculty at the University of Southern California, Dr. Hunt came to UCLA in 2001 as a professor of sociology and director of the Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies. He led the Bunche Center from 2001 to 2017, and served as chair of the department of sociology from 2015 to 2017, before being named dean of the Division of Social Sciences. He is the author or editor of several books including Black Los Angeles: American Dreams and Racial Realities (New York University Press, 2010).

Professor Hunt earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism at the University of Southern California. He holds an MBA from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.,, and a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in sociology from UCLA.
