Four African Americans Who Have Been Appointed Diversity Administrators in Higher Education

Charles E. Gibson III is the new chief diversity officer at Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, North Carolina. He was a corporate consultant for human resource issues related to diversity. Earlier, he spent five years working in the Office of  Graduate Educational Equity Programs at Pennsylvania State University.

Gibson is a graduate of Wake Forest Univesity in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where he majored in music. He holds a master’s degree in education from Pennsylvania State University, and a master’s degree in higher education and educational specialist in higher education from Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina.

Kendra N. Cadogan was named interim chief diversity and inclusion officer and interim director of the Institute for Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Transformative Practice at the State University of New York at Oswego. Most recently, Cadogan served as the senior associate for program and policy evaluation for the State University of New York System. Earlier, she served as the director of diversity, equity, and inclusion at the University at Buffalo School of Law.

Cadogan holds bachelor’s degrees in psychology and sociology and a master’s degree in education from the University at Buffalo.

Donyell Roseboro has been named chief diversity officer at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Dr. Roseboro has served in the role on an interim basis since July 2020. She joined the faculty at the university in 2007 and is currently a professor in the department of instructional technology, foundations, and secondary education.

Dr. Roseboro is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she majored in secondary education. She holds a master’s degree in history from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and a Ph.D. in curriculum and teaching/cultural studies from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Keithen Mathis is the inaugural assistant dean for diversity, equity, and inclusion in the College of Social Work at Florida State University. He has served as a social work lecturer and faculty member for the college for 25 years.

Mathis holds a bachelor’s degree in criminology and a master of social work degree from Florida State University
