Six African Americans Who Have Been Appointed to Diversity Posts in Higher Education

Jarvis Watson was appointed director of diversity, equity, and inclusion at the College of Visual Arts in New York City. He was assistant dean for student support services at Stony Brook University of the State University of New York System.

Dr. Watson is a graduate of Stony Brook University, where he majored in English. He holds a master’s degree in counselor education from Kean Unversity in New Jersey and an educational doctorate from Dowling College in Oakdale, New York, which has now closed.

Lorie Johnson-Osho is the new director of faculty diversity and development in the Office of the Provost at the University of Pittsburgh. She was an assistant professor in the education department at Grove City College in Pennsylvania.

Dr. Johnson- Osho earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism and communication and a master’s degree in counseling education from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. She holds a doctorate in educational administration and leadership from Roosevelt University in Chicago.

Mill Etienne was appointed vice chancellor for diversity and inclusion at New York Medical College of the Touro University System. He is an associate professor of neurology and of medicine and has been serving as associate dean of student affairs. He is currently serving as the President of the New York State Neurological Society.

Dr. Etienne received his bachelor’s degree from Yale University and his medical degree from New York Medical College.

Ty-Ron Douglas is the inaugural associate athletic director for diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging at the University of California, Berkeley. He was an associate professor in the department of educational leadership and policy analysis at the University of Missouri.

Dr. Douglas grew up in Bermuda before coming to the United States to earn his bachelor’s degree in English at Oakwood University in Alabama. He went on to earn a master’s degree from the University of Alabama in Huntsville and a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at  Greensboro.

Eboni Britt was named executive director of strategic communications in the Office of Diversity and Inclusion at Syracuse University in New York. Prior to her current role, Britt oversaw a strategy team in the Division of Marketing and Communications and had previously worked in the university’s Office of Human Resources.

Britt is originally from Colorado Springs, Colorado. She earned a master’s degree in public relations from the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University.

Quinn Capers IV was appointed associate dean for faculty diversity and the inaugural vice chair for diversity and inclusion in the department of internal medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Dr. Capers, a cardiologist, was vice dean for faculty affairs and professor of internal medicine at the Ohio State University College of Medicine.

A native of Dayton, Ohio, Dr. Capers is a graduate of Howard University in Washington, D.C., and earned his medical degree at Ohio State University.
