In Memoriam: Albert Nathaniel Whiting, 1917-2020

Albert N. Whiting, the former president and first chancellor of North Carolina Central University, died earlier this month in Columbia, Maryland. He was 102 years old.

Whiting was a native of  Navesink, New Jersey. He was a graduate of  Amherst College in Massachusetts. Dr. Whiting earned a master’s degree from Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, and a Ph.D. in sociology from American University in Washington, D.C.

After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, Dr. Whiting was a professor of sociology at Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina, and Atlanta University, and dean of the faculty at Morris Brown College in Atlanta and Morgan State University in Baltimore.

Dr. Whiting was named the fourth president of what was then North Carolina College at Durham in 1966. He served the university for more than 15 years as president and chancellor. Upon his retirement in 1983, Dr. Whiting was named chancellor emeritus.

After retiring from NCCU, Dr.  Whiting relocated to Columbia, Maryland, and served on the Maryland Higher Education Commission and the University of Maryland’s Board of Regents.
