Western Carolina Students Helping to Establish a Library in Rural Kenya

Students at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee held a campus book drive to stack the shelves of a library in Wongonyi, Kenya. The Center for Service Learning at the university collected about 2,000 books that will be shipped to Kenya.

In September a group of students and faculty members from Western Carolina University will travel to Kenya and deliver the books to the village. In addition, the American contingent will work for two weeks to set up the library at the local school.

Rus Brinkley, an associate professor in the university’s School of Teaching and Learning, stated that “we have a team assembled to help residents in building library fixtures, a children’s librarian to organize and do professional development, and an artist to help lead in painting a mural. Then we have our students ready to do what is needed, especially to work in classrooms, to allow time for teachers to be out while learning how to use a library.”
