A New Academic Partner for Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins, Texas

Jarvis Christian College, the historically Black educational institution in Hawkins, Texas, has entered into an agreement with the University of Texas at Tyler. Under the agreement students from Jarvis Christian College will be able to transfer to selected bachelor’s degree programs at the University of Texas at Tyler. Also, University of Texas at Tyler students will be able to pursue majors at Jarvis Christian College that are not offered at the university.

Also, some students at Jarvis Christian College will be able to begin limited study in selected master’s degree programs at the University of Texas at Tyler while they complete their bachelor’s degrees.

Amir Mirmiran, University of Texas at Tyler provost and vice president for academic affairs, notes that “the partnership is a win-win for both The University of Texas at Tyler and Jarvis Christian College, and especially for students and the region. We welcome this partnership that will not only further the friendly relationship and collaboration between our two institutions, but also help advance higher education in East Texas.”

Jarvis Christian College enrolls just under 900 students, according to the latest data supplied by the U.S. Department of Education. About 82 percent of the student body is Black.

The University of Texas at Tyler, about 20 miles South from Jarvis Christian College, enrolls about 7,000 undergraduate students and nearly 3,000 graduate students. African Americans make up 10 percent of the undergraduate student body.
