New Education Department Data on Black Enrollments in Higher Education

A new report from the U.S. Department of Education, offers new data on enrollments in higher education in the fall of 2016. The data shows there were 2,514,568 Black or African American students enrolled in Title IV institutions. They made up 12.4 percent of all students enrolled in higher education.

African Americans were 11.6 percent of all students at public colleges and universities and 11.3 percent of all students at private, nonprofit colleges and universities. In the fall of 2016, there 352,842 Black students enrolled at private, for-profit educational institutions. They made up nearly a quarter of all students at for-profit educational institutions.

There were 1,274,418 Black students at four-year undergraduate institutions. They made up 11.8 percent of all undergraduate students at four-year colleges and universities. There were 853,215 Black students attending two-year colleges. They made up 13.7 percent of all students at two-year educational institutions.

In 2016, there were 327,499 Black students enrolled in graduate school. They made up 11 percent of all students in graduate-level education.
