University of Notre Dame Scholar Named a Henry Luce III Fellow in Theology

Emmanuel Katongole, an associate professor of theology and peace studies at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, has been chosen as a Henry Luce III Fellow in Theology. The program is administered by the Association of Theological Schools and funded by the Henry Luce Foundation.

Faculty members at any of the 235 theology schools in the United States and Canada that are members of the Association of Theological Schools are eligible to apply for the fellowships. If elected as a fellow, scholars receive a $75,000 stipend and additional research funds for a sabbatical year working on a particular project.

Dr. Katongole will spend a year in sub-Saharan African conducting research on ethnic, religious, and ecological violence. A Catholic priest from Uganda, Dr. Katongole will examine the role Christianity can play in stemming the violence.

Dr. Katongole joined the faculty at the University of Notre Dame in 2013. Earlier, he taught at Duke University for 12 years. There, he was the founding co-director of the Center for Reconciliation at Duke Divinity School. Dr. Katongole is the author of Born From Lament: The Theology and Politics of Hope in Africa (Eerdmans, 2017).

A graduate of Pontifical University-Urbaniana in Rome, Dr. Katongole holds two master’s degrees and a Ph.D. in philosophy from the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium.
