Two African American Women Earn Prestigious Honors

Gilda Barabino, dean of the Grove School of Engineering at the City College of New York, has been selected to receive the 2017 Pierre Galletti Award from the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering.

A respected researcher in the study of sickle cell disease, Dr. Barabino became dean at City College in 2013. Previously, she taught at Georgia Tech, Emory University, and Northeastern University. Dr. Barabino is a graduate of Xavier University of Louisiana and holds a Ph.D. from Rice University in Houston.

Janelle Baker, the director of graduate nursing programs at Alcorn State University in Mississippi, received the Champion Award for outstanding work for eliminating health disparities at the Health Disparities Conference at Xavier University in New Orleans.

Dr. Baker holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Florida A&M University in Tallahassee. She earned a Ph.D. in nursing science from Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
