California Community Colleges Strengthen Ties With HBCUs

California Community Colleges have agreements with a large number of historically Black colleges and universities to ease transfer from two-year associate degree programs in California to four-year bachelor’s degree programs at HBCUs.

Now, two more HBCUs have joined the partnership. Under the new agreements,  students who complete two-year degrees at any of the 113 colleges in the system will be able to transfer to Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, or Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina, as juniors to begin study toward a bachelor’s degree.

Tashni-Ann Dubroy, president of Shaw University, stated, “the California Community College System is a national leader in identifying the seamless pathways between education and industry. Shaw is proud to be the newest member of a national coalition of institutions, seeking to expand access and opportunity to bright and capable students nationwide.”

M. Christopher Brown, provost at Southern University, who was recently named president of Kentucky State University, added that “the mission and function for Southern and all HBCUs remains centered on access and lifelong success. Over than last two decades, community colleges have increasingly become the portal through which many African-American and first-generation college students enter higher education. The California Community College Transfer agreement facilitates Southern University’s ability to expand the access pipeline that leads to gainful employment.”
