White House Ambassadors Call for Less Turnover of HBCU Leaders

There are currently 73 White House Historically Black College & Universities Ambassadors. This group of students has composed an open letter to all of the trustees of 105 HBCUs.

Students were prompted to act by the decision not to renew the contract of John S. Wilson as president of Morehouse College in Atlanta. Several other HBCU presidents have been fired or not had their contracts renewed within the past year.

The students’ letter calls for trustees to put “personal agendas and self-serving aside” and to “keep the best interests of all students at the center of all decision making.”

The students claim that “sustainable leadership at our institutions is vital if we want to continue to be successful in producing leaders who impact and shape the world that we live in today. Unstable leadership within our institutions must come to an end; we are attacking the legacies of our institutions by these frequent administrative changes. If we continue to change our leadership, seemingly without substantive reconciliation, we will never see longevity of the goals that have been set forth.”
