New Data on African American’s Enrollments and Degree Awards in Higher Education

Dept_of_Education_LogoA new report from the U.S. Department of Education offers preliminary data on African American’s enrollment in higher education and degree awards for the 2014-15 academic year.

The data shows that in the 2014-15 academic year, there were 3,810,300 African Americans enrolled at degree-granting institutions in the United States. They made up 13.9 percent of the total enrollments in higher education. There were 448,952 African Americans enrolled in graduate programs. They made up 11.8 percent of all graduate students.

The report also shows that 333,019 African Americans earned a total of 340,811 degree awards in the 2014-15 academic year from four-year institutions. African Americans were 10.5 percent of all students who were granted degrees at four-year institutions and earned 10.4 percent of all degrees awarded.

Black students were 14.4 percent of all students who earned degrees at two-year institutions and 24 percent of all students who earned degree awards from for-profit institutions.
