New Faculty Positions for Three Black Scholars

rexfordRexford Ahima was appointed the Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Diabetes at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. He will also serve as director of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism of the university’s School of Medicine. Dr. Ahima has been serving as a professor of medicine and director of the obesity unit at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine.

Dr. Ahima is a graduate of the University of London, where he majored in endocrinology. He earned his medical degree at the University of Ghana and holds a Ph.D. in neuroscience from Tulane University in New Orleans.

judith-casselberryJudith S. Casselbury was promoted to associate professor of Africana studies and granted tenure at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. She joined the Bowdoin faculty in 2008. Dr. Casselbury’s research focuses on women and religion. She is the author of the forthcoming book Justified by Works: Faith, Gender, and Power in Black Apostolic Pentecostalism (Duke University Press, 2016).

Dr. Casselbury is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music in Boston. She holds a master’s degree in ethnomusicology from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, and a Ph.D. in African American studies and anthropology from Yale University.

ChurchwellAndre L. Churchwell was named to the Levi Watkins Jr., M.D. Chair at the medical school of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. He also serves as senior associate dean for diversity affairs.

Dr. Churchwell is a magna cum laude graduate of the Vanderbilt University School of Engineering. He earned his medical degree at Harvard University.
