The New Director of African and African American Studies at the University of Arkansas

pearl-dowePearl Dowe was appointed interim director of the African and African American studies program at the University of Arkansas. She will serve in this role through July 2016.

In announcing the goals for her tenure as head of the program, Dr. Dowe stated, “I hope to continue involving new faculty from every corner of campus so that the African and African American Studies program will continue to provide students with a foundation to answer complex questions about society and develop an appreciation for the different cultures and people of the world.”

Dr. Dowe is an associate professor of political science in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the university. She has been affiliated with the African and African American studies program since 2008.

Dr. Dowe is the coauthor of a book entitled Remaking the Democratic Party: Lyndon B. Johnson as a Native-Son Presidential Candidate, which will be published by the University of Michigan Press in 2016. She is a graduate of Savannah State University in Georgia and holds a Ph.D. in political science from Howard University.
