A Pair of African American Men Named Chair of Their Academic Departments

White-CalvinCalvin White was appointed chair of the department of history at the University of Arkansas. He is an associate professor in the department and joined the faculty at the university in 2007. Dr. White is the author of The Rise to Respectability: Race, Religion, and the Church of God in Christ (University of Arkansas Press, 20012).

Dr. White holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history from the University of Central Arkansas in Conway. He earned a Ph.D. in history at the University of Mississippi.

TurnerTimothy Turner was named chair of the department of biology at Jackson State University in Mississippi. He is the former deputy director of research and training for the National Center for Bioethics in Research and Health Care at Tuskegee University in Alabama.

Dr. Turner is a graduate of Jackson State University. He earned a Ph.D. in endocrinology from the University of California, Berkeley and did postdoctoral research at the University of California, San Francisco and the University of Alabama.
