Four African Americans Taking on New Administrative Roles in Higher Education

Gayle BargeGayle Colston Barge was named vice president for institutional advancement at Bellevue College in Bellevue, Washington. She has been serving as director of university public relations at Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio. She begins her new job on November 17.

Dr. Barge is a graduate of Minot State University in North Dakota. She earned a master’s degree in strategic communication and leadership from Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey, and a doctorate in education from Pepperdine University in Malibu, California.

mabokela_aReitumetse Obakeng Mabokela was appointed vice provost for international affairs and global strategies at the University of Illinois. She has been serving as a professor of education and assistant dean for international studies in education at Michigan State University.

Dr. Mabokela is a magna cum laude graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio, where she majored in economics. She holds a master’s degree and a doctorate in educational policy studies from the University of Illinois. Professor Mabokela is the author or editor of several books including Soaring Beyond Boundaries: Women Breaking Barriers in Traditional Societies (Sense Publishers, 2007) and Voices of Conflict: Desegregating South African Universities (Routledge, 2000).

cableJason Cable was appointed associate athletic director for compliance at Alcorn State University in Mississippi. He was the assistant athletic director for compliance and game day activities at Savannah State University in Georgia.

Cable holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in secondary education from Alcorn State University.

John HallJohn H. Hall is the new associate vice president for research, sponsored programs, and community outreach at Clark Atlanta University in Georgia. Dr. Hall is the former Bruce Raneur Professor of Natural Sciences and chair of the department of chemistry at Morehouse College in Atlanta. He also has served as associate vice president for research and executive director of the Ohio State University Research Foundation.

Dr. Hill is a graduate of Morehouse College and holds a Ph.D. in chemistry from Harvard University.
