Three Black Scholars in New Teaching Roles

Avril Holt, an associate professor of anatomy and cell biology and ophthalmology at the Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, was granted tenure.

Dr. Holt is a graduate of Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. She earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in neuroscience from the University of Michigan.

Anthony Kwame Harrison, Associate Professor.SociologyAnthony Kwame Harrison was named the Gloria D. Smith Professor of Black Studies at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg. He has been serving as an associate professor of sociology in the university’s College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences. He joined the university faculty in 2003.

Professor Harrison is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts. He earned a master’s degree and Ph.D. at Syracuse University in New York.

nigel-westmaas-thumbNigel Westmaas was promoted to associate professor of Africana studies at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. He also was awarded tenure.

Dr. Westmaas, who has served on the faculty at Hamilton College since 2006, is a graduate of the University of Guyana. He holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Binghamton University, a campus of the State University of New York system.
