Wellesley College Student Conducts Oral History Project of Black Alumnae From the 1950s

WellesleylogoNora Mishanec, a senior majoring in international affairs at Wellesley College in Massachusetts, has conducted an oral history project relating the stories of Black women at Wellesley in the 1950s. Mishanec, from Schenectady, New York, began the oral history project as part of an assignment for a course entitled Modern Black Freedom Struggle.

Michanec stated, “The women had important stories to tell – stories that aren’t always included in the Wellesley narrative – and that was my driving force. The more I hear from alumnae of African descent, the more strongly I feel that their stories belong in the archives for other students to hear. The benefit to the college is substantial, especially when one considers the current efforts to become a more diverse and multicultural institution.”

The oral history project will find a permanent home in the college archives and will be made available to the public.
