HBCUs Don’t Fare Well in the Law School Rankings of U.S. News

USNewsgradU.S. News and World Report recently published its 2014 rankings of the nation’s best graduate and professional schools. Among the rankings were those of law schools in the United States.

The law schools at historically Black universities did not fare well in the U.S. News rankings. Of the nearly 200 law schools in the U.S., Howard University School of Law in Washington, D.C., ranked 135th. This was the highest-ranking law school at an HBCU.

U.S. News lists the rankings for only the top 145 law schools. It then lumps all the other low-ranked schools alphabetically. The five other law schools at historically Black universities all fell in this bottom group. These law schools are at Southern University, North Carolina Central University, Texas Southern University, the University of the District of Columbia, and Florida A&M University.
