Higher Education Grants of Interest to African Americans

money-bag-2Here is this week’s news of grants to historically Black colleges and universities or for programs of particular interest to African Americans in higher education.

The New York State Higher Education Services Corporation has earmarked $500,000 for organizations that will provide college tours to high school students from low-income families. The tours may be sponsored by schools, nonprofit organizations, and community-based groups that work with minority students and other underserved groups. Governor Andrew Cuomo stated, “We are giving low-income high school students and their families the opportunity to explore college firsthand. These grants are an important investment in our children, allowing disadvantaged students to visit campuses and realize that a bright academic future is within their reach.”

Historically Black Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina received a gift of $103,000 from the school 1958 graduating class. The donation is the single largest gift by a class in the university’s history. The class gift will be earmarked for scholarships for students in the field of education.
