Claflin University Strengthens Ties With Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College

Claflin University, the historically Black educational institution in Orangeburg, South Carolina, has entered into an agreement with Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College. The agreement establishes “a formal academic transfer mechanism” between the two schools. The agreement promotes and facilitates the transfer of academic credits from Orangeburg Calhoun Technical College to Claflin University in degree programs in early childhood education, elementary education, mid-level education, and politics and justice studies.

WalterTobinJrWalt Tobin, president of Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College, stated, “We consider ourselves as the first stop on the road to the American dream. They begin with us and end with Claflin.”

Dr. Tobin has been president of Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College since 2011. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics education from Clemson University. He holds a master’s degree and a doctorate in educational administration from the University of South Carolina.

Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College enrolls about 3,000 students in degree programs. African Americans make up about 56 percent of the student body.
