Nathan Stephens to Direct Multicultural Initiatives at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale

nathan-stephensNathan Stephens is the new director of the Center for Inclusive Excellence at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. For the past six years, he was the senior coordinator of the Gaines/Oldham Black Culture Center at the University of Missouri in Columbia. Earlier, he was special projects coordinator for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Central Missouri.

The Center for Inclusive Excellence works to develop, articulate and implement a comprehensive plan for recruiting, retaining and supporting historically underrepresented students. As director, Stephens will lead the university’s multicultural programs and services with a focus on teaching and learning, campus outreach, student support, and community relations.

Stephens holds a bachelor’s degree in social work from Columbia College in Missouri and a master’s degree in social work from the University of Missouri-Columbia, where he is completing his doctoral degree in educational leadership and policy analysis.
