Elijah Anderson Honored by the American Sociological Association

Anderson-closeup_0Elijah Anderson, the William K. Lanman Professor of Sociology at Yale University, received the Cox-Johnson Frazier Award from the American Sociological Association. Professor Anderson was selected for the honor for his “outstanding record of scholarship, critical engagement with policymakers, advocacy of urban ethnography within the discipline, and abiding commitment to the communities” he studies.

Dr. Anderson joined the Yale faculty in 2007. Previously, he served on the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania for more than 30 years. Professor Anderson is the author of several books including Code of the Street: Decency, Violence, and the Moral Life of the Inner City (W.W. Norton, 1999) and The Cosmopolitan Canopy: Race and Civility in Everyday Life (W.W. Norton, 2011).

A graduate of Indiana University in Bloomington, Professor Anderson earned a master’s degree at the University of Chicago and a Ph.D. in sociology at  Northwestern University.
