Columbus State Community College Names Two African American Women to Dean Positions

Columbus State Community College in Columbus, Ohio, has appointed two African American women to positions as dean. The college enrolls more than 30,000 students. African Americans make up about one quarter of the study body.

Renee Hampton is the new dean of student life at the community college. A staff member since 1999, she most recently served as special assistant to the provost and director of the college’s TRIO programs.

Hampton holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Bowling Green State University. She is pursuing an educational doctorate through Walden University.

Desiree Polk-Bland was promoted to dean of advising and student support at Columbus State. She joined the staff at Columbus State in 2008 as director of advising services. Dean Polk-Bland is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati, where she majored in psychology.

Dr. Harris had a long career in higher education leadership, serving as interim or permanent president of five historically Black institutions: Paine College, Texas Southern University, Alabama State University, Fort Valley State University, and Texas College.
