Theaster Gates Is Leading the Effort to Strengthen Ties Between the University of Chicago and the Local Arts Community

Theaster Gates, resident artist and lecturer in visual arts at the University of Chicago, has been given the added responsibilities of director of arts and public life at the university. In this role he seeks to improve the relationship between the university and the local artistic community. The flagship project is the Washington Park Arts Incubator, a two-story building that has space for exhibitions, artist residencies, and a design workshop.

Gates has been on the faculty at the University of Chicago since 2007. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Iowa State University and a second master’s degree from the University of Cape Town.
