Natasha Trethewey, the Board of Trustees Professor of English at Northwestern University, has been named one of two new chancellors of the American Academy of Poets. Since it was formed in 1946, only 115 poets have been elected to the academy.

A. Zachary Faison Jr. Named the 30th President of Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, Florida
When he takes office, Dr. Faison - at the age of 37 - will become the youngest president of an HBCU in the nation, according to the college. He currently serves as general counsel and vice president for external affairs at Tuskegee University in Alabama.
Daniel A. Wubah Will Be the Next President of Millersville University in Pennsylvania
Dr. Wubah, a native of Ghana, is a professor of biology at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. He served as provost at Washington and Lee University from 2013 to 2016. Earlier, Dr. Wubah was deputy provost at Virginia Tech.
In Memoriam: Cheryl Lynn Allen
Dr. Allen joined the faculty of Morehouse College as an instructor in 1988 and rose to the rank of full professor. On two occasions she was named interim dean of the Business and Economics Division at Morehouse College, the first woman to serve as a dean in the division.
University of Georgia Launches New Fundraising Initiative Aimed at Black Alumni
On January 9, 1961, Hamilton E. Holmes and Charlayne Hunter-Gault became the first African-American students to register for classes at the University of Georgia. Now the 1961 Club, commemorating that event, has been established to raise funds from the more than 14,000 Black alumni of the university.

The University of Virginia has named Carla Williams as director of athletics. She is the first African American woman to be named an athletics director at a Power 5 conference that make up the nation's leading football programs.
Council of Social Work Education Honors June Gary Hopps for Lifetime Achievement
June Gary Hopps is the Thomas M. "Jim" Parham Professor of Family and Children Studies in the School of Social Work at the University of Georgia. Earlier she was dean of the Boston College School of Social Work.
Arthur Dunning Retiring as President of Albany State University in Georgia
Dr. Dunning was named interim president of Albany State University in 2013 and was hired on a permanent basis in 2015. He successfully presided over the university during its merger with Darton State College.
University of Georgia Led Study Examines Huge Racial Disparity in Felony Convictions
The study determined that African American men were five times as likely as the general population to have served time in prison. The study also found that 8 percent of the overall population had been convicted of a felony at some point in their lives. But the rate for African American men is 33 percent.
Natasha Trethewey Wins the $250,000 Heinz Award in Arts and Humanities
Natasha Trethewey, the Board of Trustees Professor of English at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, has been selected to receive the Heinz Award in the Arts and Humanities. The award comes with an unrestricted $250,000 prize. She will be honored in Pittsburgh on October 18.

University of Georgia to Conduct Further Research on African American Remains Found on Campus
In November 2015, construction workers building an expansion on Baldwin Hall on the campus of the University of Georgia discovered the remains of approximately 105 individuals. The vast majority of the persons buried at the site were determined to have had mothers who were of African heritage.
