Kimberly Ballard-Washington Is the New President of Savannah State University in Georgia
Kimberly Ballard-Washington has served as interim president since July 2019. Earlier, she was associate vice chancellor for legal affairs for the University System of Georgia and is the former associate director of legal affairs for the flagship campus of the University of Georgia in Athens.
Lesia L. Crumpton-Young Selected as the Next President of Texas Southern University
Since 2019, Dr. Crumpton-Youung has served as provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland. She also was a tenured full professor inf the department of industrial and systems engineering in the Clarence M. Mitchell Jr. School of Engineering.

In Memoriam: William E. Moore, 1941-2020
After being the first African American to earn a Ph.D. in chemistry at Purdue University, Dr. Moore joined the chemistry faculty at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in the late 1960s. He achieved the rank of full professor within five years.

Dr. Okwonna has been in higher education for more than 15 years. During his tenure at San Jacinto College, he has served as pharmacy technology professor, program director, and department chair. For the past seven years, he has been dean of Health and Natural Science at the college's South Campus.
In Memoriam: Thomas Franklin Freeman, 1919-2020
After a short term as a visiting professor at Morehouse College in Atlanta, where he taught Martin Luther King Jr., Dr. Freeman began his career at what is now Texas Southern University in 1949 as a professor of philosophy. He remained affiliated with the university for more than 70 years.

Texas Southern University and Former President Austin Lane Reach a Settlement
The university has announced that after a 13-hour meeting with a mediator, Dr. Lane, whose contract was terminated in early February, would cut all ties to the university. He will be paid $560,000 — $100,000 of that compensation for "alleged emotional distress, damage to reputation and mental anguish."

In Memoriam: Chloe A. Wofford Morrison, 1931-2019
Toni Morrison was a giant of American literature and the Robert F. Goheen Professor in the Humanities Emeritus at Princeton University in New Jersey. In 1993, Professor Morrison was the first African American to be awarded the Nobel Prize in literature.

Starling, the first Black editor-in-chief in of the law review in the 96-year history of the law school, is currently completing her final year of law school at South Texas. During her time in law school, she has had to balance a full-time job at a federal agency, her educational pursuits, and motherhood.
Texas Southern University Creates Pathway Program for Crowley School District Students
Through the new agreement, students from Crowley will be able to visit Texas Southern University for campus activities. They will also be provided with dual credit courses for eligible students, summer camp programs, and priority review for academic advising and enrollment services.
New Data Shows Bar Passage Rates at HBCU Law Schools Lag the National Average
Nationwide, 88.6 percent of all 2016 law school graduates passed bar exams within two years. None of the six law schools at historically Black universities had a bar passage rate that exceeded the national average. Southern University in Louisiana and Texas Southern University had the highest rates among HBCU law schools.
