Sharod L. Tomlinson, Ron Price, and Sheleta Camarda-Webb are taking on new diversity-focused leadership roles at three schools in the eastern United States.

Here is this week’s news of grants or gifts to historically Black colleges and universities or for programs of particular interest to African Americans in higher education.

Taking on new roles are Barnard A. Jones at St. John's University in Staten Island, New York, Artha Gillis, at the University of California, Los Angeles, Terry-Ann Jones at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and David Staten at South Carolina State University.

Since 2019, Dr. Williams has been serving as president of Nassau Community College in Garden City, New York. Earlier, he was vice president for student affairs at North Shore Community College in Danvers, Massachusetts. Before that, he held various administrative posts at Northeastern Illinois University.

Janai Nelson has served as associate director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund for the past eight years. Earlier, she spent nearly 10 years in academia as a full professor and high-level administrator and dean at St. John’s University School of Law in New York.

Since 2016, Dr. Brannon has served as vice president for student services at Mitchell Community College in Statesville, North Carolina. Earlier she held administrative positions at several colleges in the New York metropolitan area.

Appointed to positions as deans are Karen E. Bravo at Indiana University/Purdue University Indianapolis, Yohuru Williams at St. John's University in Queens, New York, Kojo Mensa-Wilmot at Kennesaw State University in Georgia, and SherRhonda Gibbs at the University of Northern Colorado.

Currently, Dr. Williams serves as vice president for student affairs at North Shore Community College in Danvers, Massachusetts. Before that, he held various administrative posts at Northeastern Illinois University. He will begin his new job on July 1.

Faye Elizabeth Coleman joined the faculty at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, in 1978 as an assistant professor. In 1980, she became director for the graduate program in medical laboratory sciences for students in several diagnostic professions. She retired in 2016.

After a racist photo was posted online, students on the Staten Island campus of St. john's University staged a protest. The protesters were allegedly told to "go back from where you come from" and were taunted by White students with racial slurs.

According to U.S News & World Report, the Newark campus of Rutgers University was rated as the most diverse in the country. Andrews University, Stanford University, St. John's University, and the University of Houston tied for second place.

Leonard M. Baynes, a professor at the School of Law of St. John's University in Queens, New York, has been selected as the next dean of the University of Houston Law Center. He will begin his new job on August 15.
