Taking on new roles in higher education relating to diversity are Shawn Washington at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, Sheree M. Ohen at Amherst College in Massachusetts, and Carol A. Sumner at Northern Illinois University.
Taking on new administrative roles are Marvin Lewis at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, Yvonne Harris at Northern Illinois University, Earl Warren at Talladega College in Alabama, Marcia Pecot at Xavier University in New Orleans, and Stephen Latson at Saint Augustine’s University in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Taking on new roles related to diversity are Fatimah Conley at the University of Delaware, Jackie Hunter at the University of Vermont, Donovan Roy at the Wayne State University School of Medicine, and Janice Hamlet at Northern Illinois University.
Clanitra Nejdl, head of professional development and research services librarian at the law school Vanderbilt University in Nashville, won the Emerging Leader Award and shared the Spectrum Article of the Year Award from the American Association of Law Libraries.
Dr. Robinson most recently served as the provost and vice-president of academic affairs/chief academic officer at Inver Hills Community College, a campus of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities.
Dr. Tate has been serving as the Education Foundation Distinguished Professor, executive vice president for academic affairs, and provost at the University of South Carolina since July 2020. Professor Tate served as dean of the Graduate School and vice provost for graduate education at Washington University in St. Louis.
Dr. Tatum was dean of the College of Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago from 2013-20. He joined the faculty at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2007 after teaching at Northern Illinois University, the University of Maryland, and Buffalo State College.
Brooke Berry was appointed dean of students at Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia. Cassandra Hill has been named the next dean of the Northern Illinois University College of Law and Stephanie Dance-Barnes will be the next dean of the College of Science and Health at DePaul University in Chicago.
Currently, Dr. Tate is the Edward Mallinckrodt Distinguished University Professor in Arts & Sciences and dean of the Graduate School at Washington University in St. Louis. In 2019, he was one of four finalists for the presidency of the University of South Carolina.
William F. Tate IV was named executive vice president for academic affairs and provost at the University of South Carolina. Dr. Tate, who is currently the dean of the Graduate School at Washington University in St. Louis, will be the first African American to serve as provost at the university.
For the past decade Dr. Sheared has been serving as dean of the College of Education at California State University, Sacramento. Earlier, she served on the faculty at San Francisco State University.
Gena Flynn is the new director of the Center for Black Studies at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. She was director of academic support at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois. From 2007 to 2014, Dr. Flynn served on the staff at Columbia College in Chicago.
Since July 2012, Dr. Hemphill has served as the 10th president of West Virginia State University. Previously, he was vice president for student affairs and enrollment management at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.
Professor Pernell became dean in 2008. Previously he served for 10 years as dean of the College of Law at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. He will now return to his full-time faculty position at the FAMU law school.
The Association for Black Culture Centers is directed by Fred L. Hord, who is a professor and chair of Africana studies at Knox College. Under the agreement, Dr. Hord will join the faculty at Northern Illinois University.
Marquis Hill is a teaching associate in the jazz program at the University of Illinois-Chicago. He is a graduate of Northern Illinois University and holds a master’s degree in jazz pedagogy from DePaul University in Chicago.
Kalenda Eaton, an associate professor of English at Arcadia University in Glenside, Pennsylvania, was given the additional responsibility of director of Global Learning. Cornelius Gilbert was appointed an assistant professor in adult and higher education at Northern Illinois University.
The new appointees are LaTanya Junior at Jackson State University, Cornelius Gilbert at Northern Illinois University, and LaVar Charleston at the University of Wisconsin.
Brian Hemphill has been serving as vice president for student affairs at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.
Barbara Johnson of Northern Illinois University and Peter Williams of the University of Delaware are honored.
