Morehouse College in Atlanta Announces Budget-Tightening Measures
Morehouse College, the highly rated historically Black institution for men in Atlanta, has announced a series of initiatives to tighten its budget. Most professional staff and faculty will be required to take a one-day unpaid furlough each month. The college will also stop making matching contributions to employees' retirement accounts.

The new program will allow students to earn a bachelor's degree from their respective HBCU and a juris doctorate from Syracuse University. Participating students will spend three years completing undergraduate coursework at their HBCU and then spend three years at Syracuse's College of Law.

Teams from 48 historically Black colleges and universities competed in an academic quiz contest for the national championship title. This was the first time in the history of the competition that Spelman took home the top prize, a $75,000 grant.
Syracuse University College of Law Partners With Three HBCUs in Atlanta
Under the agreement students at Clark Atlanta University, Spelman College, and Morehouse College will spend three years at their undergraduate institution in Atlanta. They will then transfer to the College of Law at Syracuse University for three additional years of study, earning bachelor's and law degrees in six years.

Spelman College Receives a Donation of 14,000 Books From Harvard’s Skip Gates
Spelman College, the historically Black educational institution for women in Atlanta, Georgia, has received a donation of 13 pallets of books from Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr.'s personal library. According to the college, the Gates' donation is the single largest book donation ever received by an HBCU.

Charlayne Hunter and Hamilton Holmes were the first African American students to enroll at the University of Georgia in 1961. But Mary Frances Early was the first African American to earn a degree from the University of Georgia. The university will unveil an official portrait in October.
University of Virginia to Launch a Crowdsourced Transcription Effort of Julian Bond’s Papers
On August 15, individuals who join the transcription effort will be asked to go to five locations in Charlottesville where they will transcribe some of Bond's speeches. People interested in participating in the transcription effort will also be able to contribute to the project online.

In Memorian: Arthur J, McAfee Jr., 1929-2018
Arthur J. McAfee Jr. served as director of athletics at Morehouse College in Atlanta. McAfee was also the head basketball coach at the college from 1965 to 2000. During this period, he won 464 college basketball games.
In Memoriam: Lerone Bennett Jr., 1928-2018
Lerone Bennett, Jr. was a highly respected historian of the African American experience. He served as an editor at Ebony magazine for more than a half century and taught at Northwestern University.
In Memoriam: Cheryl Lynn Allen
Dr. Allen joined the faculty of Morehouse College as an instructor in 1988 and rose to the rank of full professor. On two occasions she was named interim dean of the Business and Economics Division at Morehouse College, the first woman to serve as a dean in the division.

Elfred Anthony Pinkard Appointed President of Wilberforce University
Dr. Pinkard has been serving as provost and executive vice president at Wilberforce. Before coming to Ohio, Dr. Pinkard was senior vice president, vice president for institutional advancement, and chief operating officer at Livingstone College in North Carolina.
