Meharry Medical College Expands Partnership With Detroit Medical Center
The partnership between these two institutions first began in July 2018. Through the collaborative program, students from Meharry can train with doctors at Detroit Medical Center's Sinai-Grace Hospital. The newly enhanced partnership will allow more students to participate in the program.
Meharry Medical Colleges Launches New Data Science Institute
The institute will allow health care practitioners, researchers, and students to mine more than 3.5 million medical and dental records to gain new insights into various trends that impact the health of underserved populations.
Meharry Medical College Lays Off 55 Employees
Recently, Meharry announced that it was laying off 55 employees. The layoffs were in executive and administrative ranks and did not include faculty. The medical school also stated that the layoffs would not affect the operations of the college's teaching facility, Nashville General Hospital.
Two HBCUs Recognize African Americans by Naming Auditoriums in Their Honor
The honorees are Carver Randle Sr., a practicing attorney who is a long-time supporter and former special assistant to the president of Mississippi Valley State University, and Wayne J. Riley former president of Meharry Medical College, who now serves as president of SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn.
Meharry Medical College Announces Changes to Its Curriculum
Under the new plan, students will receive the lecture part of a class on their own time, at their own pace (such as online, through videos, audio recordings, readings, or exercises). Students will spend their class time working in small groups to apply what they have learned.

Under the agreement, medical students at Meharry will receive their clinical training at TriStar Southern Hills Medical Center in Nashville, operated by HCA Healthcare. The corporation operates 177 hospitals in 20 states and the United Kingdom and treats 27 million patients annually.

Dr. Gloria Johnson-Powell considered dropping out of Meharry Medical College to devote more time to civil rights activism. However, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. urged her to complete her studies. She did.

In Memoriam: Anna Louise Cherrie Epps, 1930-2017
In 1997 Dr. Epps was named dean of the School of Medicine at Meharry Medical College, making her not only Meharry's first female dean of the medical school, but also the only African-American woman with a Ph.D. to become dean of a U.S. medical school.

During his 30-year tenure as chair of the board of trustees at Meharry Medical College, Dr. Royal personally contributed $2 million to the medical school and presided over a successful $125 million fundraising campaign.

Valerie Montgomery Rice is president and dean of the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta. She was honored by Georgia-Pacific Corporation for being strong and resilient in a traditional male occupation.
Edith Mitchell Is the New President of the National Medical Association
Dr. Mitchell is a retired Brigadier General of the United States Air Force. She currently serves as the director of the Center to Eliminate Cancer Disparities at the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.
The Next President of Meharry Medical College
James E.K. Hildreth is dean of the College of Biological Sciences at the University of California, Davis. From 2005 to 2011, Dr. Hildreth was director of the Center for AIDS Health Disparities Research at Meharry.
In Memoriam: Aaron Shirley, 1933-2014
Dr. Shirley was the first African American resident at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He served as a clinical instructor in the department of pediatrics at the University of Mississippi for more than 40 years.

In Memoriam: Kenneth Carlton Edelin, 1939-2013
Dr. Edelin was a long-time professor and administrator at the Boston University School of Medicine. He was best known for a 1975 legal case when he was convicted of manslaughter for an abortion. The conviction was later overturned.

New Dental Simulation Laboratory Now Operating at Meharry Medical College
The new facility has 30 workstations that operate in the manner of a private dental practice. Students can practice any dental procedure from a routine cleaning to a root canal on mannequins.
