Here is this week’s news of grants or gifts to historically Black colleges and universities or for programs of particular interest to African Americans in higher education.

Dr. Walker-Griffea has been serving as the first woman and first African American president of Mott Community College in Flint, Michigan. She has significant experience in community college leadership, having held academic and administrative posts at schools across the country.

The agreement will help graduates from the community college's drafting and design engineering technology program transfer into the College of Science, Engineering, and Technology at Texas Southern University to obtain a bachelor’s degree in industrial technology.

Dr. Okwonna has been in higher education for more than 15 years. During his tenure at San Jacinto College, he has served as pharmacy technology professor, program director, and department chair. For the past seven years, he has been dean of Health and Natural Science at the college's South Campus.

Here is this week’s roundup of African Americans who have been appointed to new administrative positions at colleges and universities throughout the United States.

Taking on new duties are Greg Hunley at Mississsippi University for Women, Janet Wormack at Houston Community College in Texas, Tommye Sutton at the University of Virginia, Sheriah Dixon at Syracuse University and Crystal L. Wheeler at Howard University.

A new study is being conducted by the University of Houston to see if a program that will provide food to Black and Latino/a students at Houston Community College will result in better academic performance and increase retention rates.

From 2005 to 2016, Dr. Harmon served as president of Central College of Houston Community College, which today enrolls about 18,000 students.

Dr. Beatty has been serving as vice chancellor for instructional services and chief academic officer at Houston Community College. Previously, she served as associate vice chancellor for student success at Tarrant Count College in Fort Worth, Texas.

The agreement will facilitate a seamless transfer of students who earn associate's degrees at the system's community colleges to bachelor's degree programs at Texas Southern University.
