Grinnell College in Iowa Honors Its First Black Graduate
Edith Renfrow Smith was the only Black student on campus when she graduated with a degree in psychology in 1937. Now 108 years old, Renfrow Smith is the oldest living graduate of the college.

Several Racist Incidents Occur on the Campus of Grinnell College in Iowa
Racist and white supremacist graffiti was discovered on campus signs and vehicles. In addition, members of the college community had reported hearing racial slurs shouted from moving vehicles. The student newspaper reported that racist graffiti was found on 14 vehicles.

Beronda L. Montgomery Will Be the Next Dean of Grinnell College in Iowa
Dr. Montgomery currently serves as a professor in the departments of biochemistry and molecular biology and microbiology and molecular genetics, as well as assistant vice president for research and innovation at Michigan State University. She will begin her new job on July 1.

In Memoriam: Clifford E. Reid, 1945-2021
Clifford E. Reid was the Charles A. Dana Professor of Economics, Emeritus at Colby College. He taught at Grinnell College in Iowa for 16 years before joining the faculty at Colby College in 1987. He taught there for 22 years.

The new diversity officers are Michael Snowden at Northwestern State University in Louisiana, Schvalla R. The Next Chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro
Franklin D. Gilliam Jr. has been serving as professor of public policy and political science and dean of the Luskin School of Public Affairs at the University of California, Los Angeles. He joined the UCLA faculty in 1986. Dr. Gilliam will become chancellor of UNCG on September 8.
