Colorado College executive vice president and chief of staff, Manya Whitaker, has been elevated to interim president effective July 1. Her selection follows the resignation of Colorado College's first woman of color president, L. Song Richardson.

Heidi Lewis, an associate professor of feminist and gender studies at Colorado College, has been elected president of the National Women’s Studies Association. Established in 1977, the NWSA prioritizes promoting and supporting knowledge about women and gender through teaching, learning, research, and service in academic settings.

Dr. Garcis, who has been a professor at Colorado College for more than three decades, will also lead the State Historian’s Council. Dr. Garcia's research focuses on the experiences of women of the Black Atlantic in the beginning of the twentieth century.

In an effort to encourage more African Americans to become teachers in the state, the Sachs Foundation in conjunction with Colorado College is offering African Americans who graduate from the college $10,000 for each of their first three years in the classroom if they become teachers in Colorado.

Richardson, who is of African American and Korean descent, currently is the dean and chancellor’s professor of law at the University of California, Irvine School of Law. When she was appointed to that post in January 2018, she was the only woman of color to lead a top-30 law school.

Here is this week’s news of grants or gifts to historically Black colleges and universities or for programs of particular interest to African Americans in higher education.

Taking on new duties are LaKami Baker at Auburn University in Alabama, Ikemefuna Agbanusi at Colorado College, Sheryl Kennedy Haydel at Louisiana State University, Anthony Troy Adams at Kentucky State University, and January O'Neil at the University of Mississippi.

The new deans are Claire Garcia at Colorado College, Malik S. Henfield at Loyola University in Chicago, Wendi S. Williams at Mills College in Oakland, California, Nicola Boothe Perry at Florida A&M University, and John M.M. Anderson at Howard University in Washington, D.C.

They are: Robin Means Coleman at the University of Michigan, Heidi R. Lewis at Colorado College, Nsoki Mavinga at Swarthmore College, Haywood L. Brown at the University of South Florida, Arris Golden at Michigan State University, and Andre Isaacs at the College of the Holy Cross.

Idris Goodwin, an assistant professor of theatre at Colorado College, has won the 2017 Blue Ink Playwriting Award from the American Blues Theater in Chicago. The award was created in 2010 to help the careers of budding playwrights.

The African Americans in new faculty positions are Rashida K. Braggs at Williams College in Massachusetts, Prentiss A. Dantzler at Colorado College, Beronda Montgomery at Michigan State University, and Norman Anderson at Florida State University.

The seven Black scholars who are taking on new duties are Paul C. Clement, Jamal Ratchford, Nicholas Ball, Dineo Khabele, James Hill, Jordanna Malton, and Robert Winn.
