Dr. Spellman served on the faculty at the medical schools of Howard University, Charles R. Drew University, the University of Southern California, UCLA, and from 1978 to 2004 at Harvard Medical School.

The Men of African American Legacy Empowering Self (MAALES) program engaged Black men in small discussion groups on safe sex practices for men who had sex with both women and men. The discussions also included culturally relevant discussions that were centered upon Black men.

The program, which has produced 61 graduates over the past four years, has received accreditation for five years from the Council on Education for Public Health.
