Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio, announced that it has made substantial progress in addressing the school’s financial problems. The university now exceeds state-mandated financial benchmarks, and as a result as been removed from the Fiscal Watch designation by state authorities.
The Broadening Ohio’s Workforce in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics-Agriculture scholarship offers a renewable $10,000 scholarship for first-year students and community college transfers. To be eligible, students must be Ohio residents and have had a minimum 3.0 grade point average in high school or community college.
One of the main reasons for the first-time student enrollment increase was a 76 percent reduction in the out-of-state tuition surcharge for students who are not Ohio residents. The largest contingent of new out-of-state students is from Michigan, followed by Illinois and Indiana.
At Chicago State, Harris founded the Teaching and Educating Men of Black Origin program and the Continuing the Journey Conference for Black male high school students. He was the director of the African American Male Resource Center.
For the current academic year, out-of-state tuition was just under $14,000. For students from Ohio, tuition was $6,246. Under the new tuition formula, the out-of-state surcharge will be reduced by 76 percent for most students entering this coming fall.
Four former president of predominantly Black universities have formed a new executive search firm that will focus on filling positions at historically Black colleges and universities and other predominantly Black educational institutions.
Under the agreement, faculty members from universities in Nigeria will come to Central State University to conduct research. The African Leadership Institute will work to recruit Nigerian students to enroll at Central State University.
