Three African Americans Appointed to Diversity Posts at Colleges and Universities

Altheia Richardson has been named the inaugural chief diversity officer at Newberry College in South Carolina. D’Angelo Taylor has been named as the vice president for hope, unity and belonging at Belmont University in Nashville and Monae Roberts is the inaugural chief diversity officer for the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California, Davis.

Fisk and Belmont Universities in Nashville Form the Social Justice Collaborative

Historically Black Fisk University in Nashville and predominantly White Belmont University in Nashville have announced the establishment of the Belmont-Fisk Social Justice Collaborative, a partnership between the universities designed to promote social justice through exposure to civil rights and social justice movements across Middle Tennessee.

Karen Brown was appointed dean of the School of Education at the University of the Virgin Islands. Samuel Graham, Jr. will be the next dean of the A. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland and Tamika Wordlow Williams is the new dean of students at Belmont University in Nashville.

Dr. Wayne Lewis most recently served as the commissioner of education for the Kentucky Department of Education. He taught as an associate professor in the department of educational leadership studies and as an affiliated faculty member with the African American and Africana studies program at the University of Kentucky.

Paulette Dillard Named the Eighteenth President of Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina

Dr. Dillard had been serving as interim president of Shaw University since June 2017. Previously, she was the vice president of academic affairs and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the university. Dr. Dillard is a trained medical technologist certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathology.

Dr. Dillard has served as a department chair, dean, and vice president of academic affairs at the university. She will serve as interim president while a nationwide search is underway to find the next permanent president of the university.

In Memoriam: Courtney Salters Henderson, 1975-2017

A native of Tupelo, Mississippi, Salters Henderson joined the staff at Vanderbilt University in 1998 as an admissions counselor. In 2005 she was appointed director of student organizations and served in that post at the time of her death.

Jeffery Burgin Named Dean of Students at Belmont University

Dr. Burgin has been serving as vice president for student affairs at Alabama A&M University. He will begin his new duties on December 1.
