Toby Martin, a renowned sculptor and associate professor of art at Spelman College in Atlanta, died late last month. He was 60 years old.
A native of Jacksonville, Florida, he graduated from Morehouse College in 1976. He earned a master of fine arts degree from Georgia State University’s sculpture program where his thesis was entitled, “Form From My Spirit in a Three-Dimensional World.”
Martin joined the faculty at Spelman College in 1987. Several of Professor Martin’s works are displayed on the Spelman College campus.

I had no idea. I remember the many times Professor Martin invited his students into his studio not just to see his work… But to make our own art.
