University of Alaska Anchorage — Assistant Dean of Social Work

Position Summary:
The UAA School of Social Work seeks an experienced and collaborative leader who brings a creative, inspirational vision and strong leadership, as well as strong organizational and management skills to spearhead the school’s goals of doubling the number of MSW graduates in five years and expanding the BSW program to support the growth of Alaska’s health, behavioral health, and social service workforce. Applicants must hold a PhD in social work or related field and an MSW degree from a CSWE accredited program.

Duties:
Reporting to the Dean and Associate Dean of the College of Health, the Assistant Dean of Social Work’s primary responsibility (51%) is to provide effective leadership of all academic (teaching and research) and administrative matters in the School of Social Work and to be a member of the College of Health leadership team. Specific duties include but are not limited to: unit organization and strategic planning, recruitment and retention of high-quality faculty and staff, budget development and management to assure adequate resources to fulfill the mission of the school, curriculum and instruction, and active academic program accreditation reaffirmation oversight. 

The Assistant Dean of Social Work leads the school’s strategic planning efforts, and actively advocates for the School of Social Work with constituencies both internal and external to the university. The Assistant Dean engages and works with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders and represents the School in various professional settings. In their role as a member of the College of Health leadership team, the Assistant Dean of Social Work is expected to regularly consult with the Dean’s Office and actively collaborate with other assistant deans in the College in order to advance the missions of both the School of Social Work and the College of Health. 

In addition to these administrative duties, the Assistant Dean of Social Work is also expected to teach courses, conduct scholarly research, and provide service to the university, the community, and the profession. These additional non-administrative activities comprise the remainder of the Assistant Dean of Social Work’s workload (49%).

Summary of UAA School of Social Work:
UAA and its community campuses are located in some of the most breathtaking settings in the world. The attractive wooded campus at the foot of the Chugach Mountains serves as a central hub for Alaska’s largest city. Serving more than 10,000 students in a region covering nearly 85,000 square miles, UAA is the largest of the three state universities forming the University of Alaska system. Recognized by the Carnegie Foundation as “community-engaged,” UAA is a comprehensive university consisting of a main campus in Anchorage, four community campuses in southcentral Alaska, and several extension sites in rural communities and on military installations. As an open-enrollment institution, UAA has a unique university mission, spanning occupational certificates and AA degrees to Ph.D.’s. Many of our students are first-generation college students. The UAA community celebrates a rich cultural heritage and diverse student body.

The School of Social Work has accredited BSW and MSW programs designed to prepare practitioners to meet the social service needs of a large, diverse, multi-cultural state. The BSW is primarily campus-based, with courses offered rotationally in a distance format. The MSW delivers instruction through distance delivery to over 80 students living in rural and urban communities across Alaska with practicum experiences available in the students’ home communities. The MSW program also offers an MSW / MPH Dual Degree in collaboration with the UAA Division of Population Health Sciences.  The UAA School of Social Work enjoys considerable community support and prepares students for addressing the needs of diverse populations in rural, remote, and urban areas of the State of Alaska. The curriculum involves course delivery through face-to-face, hybrid, and distanced delivered courses, and all courses are highly accessible to students residing outside of Anchorage. The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accreditation was re-affirmed in June of 2018 through 2026.

Salary:
Salary will be determined upon initial appointment based upon academic rank, record of scholarly accomplishment and achievement, and demonstrated prior administrative experience.

Assignment Information:
Associate Professor or Professor of Social Work, Full-Time, 12 months per year and full employee benefits package.
