Five African Americans Who Have Been Appointed to New Administrative Posts at Universities

James Curbeam was appointed director of enterprise risk management at Morgan State University in Baltimore. This is a newly created position designed to strengthen the university’s management of risk across the full spectrum of university functions. He most recently served as director of risk management for Baltimore County Public Schools.

Curbeam holds a bachelor’s degree in finance from Creighton University in Omaha and an executive MBA from the University of Nebraska-Omaha.

Vanessa Love has been named the director of the Office of Civil Rights & Title IX at the University of Pittsburgh. She was assistant vice president in the Office of Compliance & Integrity at Point Park University in Pittsburgh.

Love holds a bachelor’s degree in political science, a master’s degree in international affairs, and a juris doctorate, all from the University of Pittsburgh.

Ian Bouie has joined Stockton University in New Jersey as the director of academic achievement programs. He most recently served as the program advisor for teacher education admissions, recruitment, and diversity at Montclair State University in New Jersey.

Dr. Bouie is a graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson University in Florham Park, New Jersey, where he majored in communication. He earned a master’s degree in media studies from William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey, and a Ph.D. in urban systems from Rutgers University-Newark.

Taylor Whitehead was named director of marching and pep bands at Virginia State University. Dr. Whitehead served as assistant band director at the university from 2013 until he was named interim band director in 2022.

Dr. Whitehead, a native of Meherrin, Virginia, holds a bachelor’s degree in music education from Virginia State University. He earned a master’s degree in music education from Norfolk State University in Virginia, and recently completed work on a doctor of music education degree at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Tourea B. Robinson is the new vice president for institutional advancement, development, marketing, and communications at Edward Waters University in Jacksonville, Florida. She is the former director of donor relations and special events at Florida State College in Jacksonville.

Robinson earned a bachelor’s degree in mass communications from Savannah State University in Georgia. She holds an MBA with a concentration in public administration and is currently pursuing a doctor of management in organizational leadership from the University of Phoenix.
