California State Universities Appoint Two African American Men to Dean Positions

Arnold Holland is the new dean of the College of the Arts at California State University, Fullerton. Dr. Holland has served as interim dean of the college for the past two years. Prior to that, he served as associate dean for the college. Dr. Holland joined the university’s faculty in 1998.

“The College of the Arts is an essential part of our campus’s cultural fabric and the surrounding community. We provide transformational experiences for our students, the community and beyond,” Dr. Holland said. “It is truly an honor to be able to lead this college into the future.”

Dr. Holland is a graduate of Arizona State University, where he majored in graphic arts. He earned a master of fine arts degree in visual communications from Virginia Commonwealth University and a doctorate in higher education leadership from California State University, Fullerton.

Mitch Mitchell has been appointed associate vice president for student success and dean of students at California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt in Arcata. He has been serving as the assistant dean of students at Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina. Earlier, Dr. Mitchell held administrative posts at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon, and Goshen College in Indiana.

“I’m excited to learn more about and collaboratively build upon Cal Poly Humboldt’s rich legacy of student success,” Dr. Mitchell said. “Together we can continue to nurture and maximize a campus environment where students, faculty, and staff can grow, innovate, and thrive.”

Dr. Mitchell is a graduate of Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina, where he majored in business administration. He holds a master’s degree in communication from Regent University in Virginia Beach and a Ph.D. in higher education leadership from Capella University.
