Job Description:
The Visual Designer functions within Brown’s Office of University Communications (OUC) to deliver creative services to a wide range of campus partners in support of strategic marketing communications projects. The Visual Designer collaborates with marketing, web and digital, client relations, and news and editorial teams on marketing communications initiatives that sustain and build the University’s global reputation.
Reporting to the Art Director, the Visual Designer is a member of the Creative Services team and aims to produce compelling, innovative designs for integrated, multi-platform use across Brown’s web, digital and print media. The Office of University Communications offers cohesive marketing strategies, visual identity and multi-platform visual design; web and digital communications strategy and front-end development; photography; video production; and print production and mail services.
The Visual Designer helps to steward the University brand by executing high-quality design across communications channels for a range of constituents ensuring that visual content aligns with Brown’s policies and protocols relating to visual identity, image use and accessibility. The Visual Designer develops creative solutions that effectively communicate the strategic intent through production and often serves as the creative lead for projects, establishing a look and feel across digital and print channels.
The Visual Designer exhibits a high level of creativity in generating original design concepts within an established visual identity system. The Visual Designer develops creative for a range of mediums including web, social media, video, and print, through the strategic use of photography, iconography, colors, and type treatment. Motion and animation experience preferred.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Required: Bachelor’s degree in visual design, digital arts or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Required: Minimum 3 years of design experience, including branding, visual identity, web and digital design, and/or print design.
- Required: Portfolio that demonstrates a range of design deliverables across media.
- Demonstrated expertise in design fundamentals, the ability to think creatively and provide marketable solutions when conceiving, developing, and producing deliverables.
- Experience with online collaboration tools for project management a plus.
- Motion and animation experience preferred.
Job Competencies
- Extensive knowledge of digital and print design principles, including accessible design principles and application.
- Superb verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
- Strong visual aesthetic.
- Proficiency with Apple OS, Adobe Creative Suite including After-Effects, Sketch, and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Knowledge of HTML, CSS and Drupal and related tools.
- Knowledge of web and digital strategies and standards to improve communications, usability and user experience, accessibility/508 compliance.
- Knowledge of print production processes and best practices.
- Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.
Additional Information
