Brown University — Research Assistant

Job Description:

The Research Assistant position will focus on assisting the laboratory with making progress toward its experimental goals. The Research Assistant will conduct research, record, analyze and interpret data and coordinate manuscript preparation. This position is expected to work closely with graduate students and postdocs to assist in their projects as needed, as well as present their research findings in meetings and conferences. The Research Assistant will also be responsible for placing orders, lab organization, as well as coordinating IACUC protocol submission and animal colony management.

This Research Assistant position is expected to start in May 2023.

The Chellappa lab is interested in understanding the interactions between the host and microbiome in driving cellular metabolism and host phenotypes in aging and age-related diseases. The lab uses a range of techniques, including 16S sequencing, metagenomics, metabolomics, and CRISPR screens in bacteria, cell culture, and mouse models. The mission of the lab is to train next-generation scientists to conduct rigorous research and equip them with skill sets to advance their careers.

This is fixed term position with a current end date of 5/31/2025, which may be extended based upon available funding.

Job Qualifications

Grade 7
Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree with prior related experience or extensive coursework required
  • And/or the equivalent combination or education and experience
  • Experience in biochemistry, chemistry, or mass spectrometry with an interest in wet lab research is preferred

Grade 8
Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 1-2 years of experience required
  • And/or, the equivalent combination or education and experience
  • A background in molecular biology/ biochemistry or chemistry with an interest in wet lab research is preferred.
  • Research experience in molecular biology/ cell culture/ animal work is preferred.
  • Experience in liquid chromatography and/ or mass spectrometry is preferred.
