Job Description:
The Director of Prospect Research leads the Advancement Division’s prospect research team, and plays a critical role in driving fundraising results through directing a comprehensive program focused on effective prospect identification, in-depth research and data analysis. The position works closely with senior staff, unit managers and individual fundraisers to leverage opportunities to identify prospects, align their interests, and develop strategies to engage and solicit donors to make significant philanthropic gifts to Brown.
The Director of Prospect Research leads project management for the division’s prospect initiatives, including the design, planning and implementation of strategic data-driven prospect identification; the execution of dynamic wealth and propensity reviews; and the development of a proactive communications and operational plan to support major gift and principal gift prospect development. Additionally, the Director of Prospect Research directs the team’s due diligence research efforts, providing guidance for research methodology and deliverables, as well as oversight for the intake, tracking, and notification process . The Director will set strategic goals for the research operation, including annual quantitative and qualitative goals for program, team and individuals. To ensure that Brown has a high performing program, the Director will be an active member of the fundraising community and will stay abreast of industry standards, best practices, current and emerging trends by engaging peers, interacting with other industry professionals, and demonstrate a commitment to continuous growth and improvement.
The Director of Prospect Research oversees a team of 7+ members; establishes strategic short term and long-term goals for a comprehensive prospect identification and wealth review program; leads and mentors staff and develops individual work plans; and evaluates individual and team performance through established metrics and peer benchmarks. The Director will design and implement departmental policies and procedures, and will serve as an expert resource for prospect information, prospect strategy, and wealth analysis for the division.

Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in a related field such as prospect research, prospect management, fundraising, non-profits and/or market analysis
- Minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience
Required Qualifications
- Proficiency in conducting donor research with experience in recognizing and assessing wealth indicators and giving capacity
- Supervisory and management experience with ability to coach, mentor, and to tailor professional development plans for individual staff members
- Experience working in a fast‐paced, results‐oriented environment and demonstrated flexibility in meeting shifting demands and priorities
