Job Description:

This position is an advisor and strategic partner to the leadership and managers in the Division of Biology & Medicine working in close partnership with UHR. Serves as a consultant and provides leadership throughout the division in all areas of human resource issues including culture and engagement, employment, recruitment, performance management, employee relations, training and development, organizational design and compensation. Manages the BioMed Human Resources Department.

Administers University policies and procedures. Participates in the development of divisional policies, procedures, programs, short- and long-range planning, policy formulation and goal setting. Participates in standing and ad hoc meetings related to HR and other leadership groups to effectively integrate divisional needs as they relate to systems, programs and services with central HR.

Partners and collaborates with appropriate staff and faculty within the administrative, clinical, academic and research departments to ensure effective staffing support and a commitment to diversity in hiring within the Division. Proactively advises managers about how to more effectively manage their staffing resources. Oversee grading of all new divisional staff positions. Oversees and manages all BioMed hiring processes and approves hires and starting salaries for employees.

Interfaces with management, employees, applicants and other HR professionals both internal and external to Brown allowing the opportunity to identify emerging issues and recommend appropriate courses of action. Working with individual supervisors, develops and approves appropriate performance management communications/actions; identifies, evaluates and resolves human resources issues arising due to performance issues, skill gaps, employee relations concerns; and assists with the interpretation and consistent application of HR policy and employment law.

Manages BioMed annual performance reviews/merit increase process. Reviews and grades audit/equity requests and makes recommendations for appropriate salaries.

Job Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree plus 7-10 years of progressively more responsible human resources experience required or equivalent combination of education/experience.
  • Prior experience in consulting with internal clients on some combination of recruitment, compensation, and organizational development
  • Prior experience in the higher education setting is helpful but not required
