Job Description:

The Biostatistician for SPH HSPP will use technical skills to help facilitate the design, conduct, management, and analysis of a variety of different research projects that will be run through the Center for Advancing the Study of Healthcare. Duties include: helping researchers design studies, constructing databases, managing data, statistical programming and analysis, and interpretation and reporting of results.

The position requires interacting with project investigators, collaborators internal and external to Brown, other analysts, and a variety of research staff. Position responsibilities include the following:

  • to create study-specific data analysis files;
  • to develop and maintain core and study-specific analytic files;
  • to conduct analyses of research data (including large-scale administrative data);
  • to assist in the preparation of reports, manuscripts and project-related technical writing; and
  • to generate metadata (i.e., data that provides information about the project datasets) as well as document and archive analytic files for future reference by investigators.

The position also requires good writing skills for summarizing the approaches employed to generate analytic output.

The incumbent will function as a project team member and participate in project team meetings. The Biostatistician will contribute to the authorship of manuscripts.

Education

  • Master’s Degree and 1 to 3 years experience or Bachelor’s Degree and 5 to 7 years experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Degree in Public Health with a concentration in Biostatistics or Mathematics or combination of extensive statistical training and experience.
  • Preferred: Master’s degree in Biostatistics, Statistics, or Biometry.

Experience

  • Appointment grade will be commensurate with experience and years post-Masters’ degree.

Job Competencies

  • Data management and analysis experience.
  • Excellent computer skills: Microsoft Word, Creation of charts & graphs using Microsoft Excel and Power Point, and analysis of data.
  • Advanced SAS programming knowledge, skills and experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, set priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Possesses a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive environment.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of the US health care system.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the US Health Care System, including standard healthcare billing/coding systems such as ICD 9/10, CPT, HCPCS, and DRG codes.
  • Experience with CMS(Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) claims and beneficiary assessment data.
  • Experience with EHR (Electrical Health Record) or laboratory data.
  • Proficiency in Stata, R , Python and SQL.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging trends in advanced statistical analysis.

This position works with and analyzes confidential and human subject data and, as such, requires the incumbent to maintain an up-to-date Protection of Human Research Subjects certification through the Brown University Research Protections Office.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift or move office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds.
