POSITION DESCRIPTION

THE DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY & BIOCHEMISTRY within the School of Physical Sciences at UC San Diego seeks to establish a pool of outstanding instructors for undergraduate courses in all areas of chemistry with particular interest in biochemistry laboratory instruction.

Responsibilities entail the effective instruction of students, teaching classes in accordance with course objectives and published schedules, advising students on academic matters and maintaining an active interest in the advances/current thinking in their subject area.

QUALIFICATIONS

Basic qualifications (Required at Time of Application)

Applicants must have or be a candidate for a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related field. Experience in both biochemistry lecture and laboratory-based settings

Additional qualifications (Required at Time of Start)

Ph.D. must be awarded prior to the start of the teaching quarter in order for an offer of employment to be made.

Preferred qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates who have experience in teaching at the undergraduate level in the area of biochemistry. Additionally, applicants must have prior research experience , two supportive letters of references, strong record of mentorship, teaching experience in both lecture and laboratory-based settings, and a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion are highly desirable.

  • Recent Teaching Evaluations – Teaching evaluations from up to four recent teaching experiences, including comprehensive set of comments from students. Evaluations should come from a large class if available . (Please include a legend to help interpret the scale and rubric for evaluation.) If not available, upload a letter of reference on your teaching ability.
  • Statement of Teaching – 1-page teaching statement.
  • Statement of Contributions to Diversity – Statement describing past and/or ongoing contributions to diversity, equity and inclusion. Applicants should summarize their past or potential contributions to diversity. See our Faculty Equity site for more information.
  • Sample Syllabi – At least one and up to three. Additional syllabi or other documents can be added through miscellaneous/additional documents (optional).

Candidates new to the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry should provide at least 2 letters of recommendation.
