Summary:
The Senior Research Assistant will plan and implement research activities and operations related to animal research in the Center for Translational Neuroscience (CTN). The Senior Research Assistant will oversee the efficient and safe running of the research, primarily research animal activities for multiple, active neuroscience laboratories in the Center who maintain multiple large and small animal colonies. Specifically, the Senior Research Assistant will maintain research animal colonies and associated facilities and equipment, and coordinate research animal use together with the PIs and laboratory personnel. The position holder would preferably possess experience handling experimental rodents and will engage in exciting research in brain disease involving responsibilities including management and oversight of daily animal care, monitoring, record‐keeping and genetic testing of animals as required in animal husbandry and experimental design. Where experimental objectives involve behavior observation and behavior assays employing instrumentation, the Senior Research Assistant would conduct experiments, manage and oversee the use of behavior test facilities and equipment. The Senior Research Assistant will also be responsible for training in animal husbandry and use of behavioral equipment. The Senior Research Assistant would also have the opportunity to lead and assist with animal experiments. The Senior Research Assistant will work with the Center for Animal Research and Education (CARE) staff and veterinarians who have primary responsibilities for cage changing. Other related responsibilities include managing lab compliance with accepted animal care standards and IACUC regulations, as well as reports, records and IACUC documentation.
The Senior Research Assistant will independently conduct experiments as well as supervise and provide technical assistance to laboratory personnel. This position may contribute data and figures to reports, manuscripts and grant applications.
This is a fixed term position for one year, which may be extended based upon the availability of funding.
Job Qualifications:
Education
- Required: Bachelor degree on biology, biochemistry, genetics or related field (molecular biology) and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience
- 5-7 years of experience with basic research laboratory approaches and common techniques and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 5 or more years of experience with direct research animal care and handling is required.
- Prior experience with molecular, sterile techniques, standard laboratory techniques and research area preferred
- Experience with conducting and interpretation of animal behavior tests is preferred but not required.
- Relevant coursework and knowledge of laboratory approaches and techniques in the areas of Molecular, Cell Biology and Biochemistry
- Strong computer skills with preferably some experience using laboratory data programs
- Familiarity with public databases.
- Excellent written and communication skills
