Job Description:

The Assistant Director for the Brown Center for Students of Color oversees all post-graduation pathways for undergraduate students and Graduate Student of Color Initiatives. This role provides administrative and project management related to all BCSC programs that promote undergraduate co-curricular learning around identity development for designated student communities, specifically overseeing BCSCs annual Latinx Senior Celebration Ceremony Dinner, ONYX Rites of Passage Graduation Dinner, and Senior Stole Celebration.

The Assistant Director provides supervision, training, support, and mentorship to the BCSC Coordinator of Co-Curricular Initiatives. This role collaborates with students, faculty, and colleagues to raise awareness/develop pathways that center the post- graduation success of all students of color. This role educates the campus community, and institution and division leaders, advocating for the post-graduation needs of all students of color, and facilitates opportunities for intellectual and personal community building among Graduate Students of Color. This Assistant Director collaborates with all BCSC professional team members and is responsible for cultivating an environment that centers students of color at the intersection of their identities and lived experiences to ensure their academic and personal success. Additionally, advancing Brown’s and the Division of Campus Life’s mission of student centered programming.

This role oversight includes leadership of undergraduate Student of Color Initiatives including Asian American Student Initiative, Black Student Initiatives, Multicultural student Initiatives, and Men of Color Student Initiatives. Collectively this role will support and advocate for all Graduate Students of Color and encourage connection between graduate students and the resources of the BCSC. This Assistant Director is responsible for developing learning outcomes and assessment tools for programs and undergraduate and graduate leadership programs that they manage.

The goal of BCSC successful post-graduation pathways for undergraduate students is to positively impact all undergraduate students of color through cultivating an environment that centers, advocates, and develops students of color at the intersection of their identities and lived experiences to ensure their academic and personal success post-graduation. In collaboration with the Associate Dean and Director, this role will provide support to Center-wide programs that engage students of color in building community at Brown and beyond.

Job Qualifications 

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree is strongly preferred.
  • Three years related experience required, preferably in a college environment. Strong preference for experience in the following fields: Student Development, Social Justice Education, Ethnic Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Queer Studies, Women’s Studies or a related field.
  • Extensive experience managing student staff. Conflict management skills are a plus.
  • Experience managing professional staff.
  • Project management skills and proven examples of sustainable successful event management.
  • Understanding of issues of social justice and demonstrated effectiveness in promoting respect and appreciation for diversity and inclusion among students and staff is required.
  • Possesses a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive campus community.
  • Demonstrated skill in facilitation, including an understanding of group dynamics and leadership development.
  • Ability to take initiative and to offer creative solutions to problems.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.
  • Ability to collaborate and consult with multiple campus constituents, including but not limited to: senior-level administrators, faculty, undergraduates, graduate students, and alumni.
  • Demonstrated experience advising, supporting, mentoring, and/or advocating for students and student initiatives.
  • Effective organizational, administrative and time management skills required.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills required.
  • Flexibility to evolve with changing university and campus life needs, goals and policies required.
  • Computer proficiency in word processing, data management, and spreadsheets. Graphic design skill is a plus.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including multiple nights and weekends as needed.
