Job Duties
Norfolk State University’s (NSU) Office of Alumni Relations & Annual Giving invites applications for the position of Assistant Director of Alumni Relations. The mission of the Office of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving is to cultivate a lifelong relationship with alumni, donors and friends; and encourage them to support the advocacy; recruitment and retention; fundraising and community development initiatives of the University.
Reporting directly to the Executive Director of Alumni Relations & Annual Giving, incumbent shall:
- Work within a collaborative office environment and share responsibilities for planning and implementing alumni engagement initiatives designed to foster lifelong connections between NSU’s 37,000+ alumni population and the university.
- Communications Management – Publish alumni newsletter and provide creative writing for all alumni communications including BEHOLD (university magazine), Making Waves (university newsletter) and the Philanthropy Report (donor magazine); oversee and manage all web content including social media and e-communications for Alumni Relations including relevant and timely updates of the alumni online community and social media sites.
- Event Planning – Coordinate and execute alumni events on and off campus with an emphasis on Homecoming, Alumni Day, Regional Receptions, MEAC Tournament and Commencement; create and implement a relevant young alumni program that will keep recent graduates connected to NSU.
- Administrative Management – Provide administrative oversight of the alumni database, Blackbaud’s Raisers Edge and NetCommunity;
- Volunteer Management- Manage a cadre of NSU volunteers including the NSU Alumni Association Board and its volunteers, activities, and events.

Minimum Qualifications
- Considerable knowledge of best practices in alumni relations and engagement.
- Skilled in the professional use of social networking platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and other social media sites, to engage alumni and university stakeholders.
- Highly skilled in the use Microsoft Office Suite to perform various tasks including creating word documents, spreadsheets, reports, and presentations.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain relationships with a diverse constituent base, including, but not limited to students, faculty, staff, alumni, and benefactors in the community.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, to members of the university community, including alumni, students, staff, faculty and external stakeholders.
- Should be customer service oriented with the ability to use problem resolution techniques when serving customers.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and take appropriate action with minimum supervision.
- Must have progressive experience, generally equating to 3+ years, in managing diverse campus activities, event planning, and/or marketing/communications.
- Must be able to travel as required, and work evenings and weekends, as needed.
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, English or journalism desired or equivalent combination of training and education that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Skilled in the use of Blackbaud’s Raiser’s Edge software.
- Possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
- 3+ years, in managing diverse campus activities, event planning, and/or marketing/communications.
